The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and ZESCO Limited have commenced a 300 Kwacha electricity subsidy program aimed at increasing access to reliable power in rural and peri-urban areas.
ZESCO Stakeholder Relations Manager Rose Sibisi explained that the initiative, under the Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Transformation in Zambia (ASCENT Zambia) project, will allow households and businesses in eligible areas to connect to the national grid at a reduced cost.
Ms. Sibisi said the program targets 100,000 new on-grid connections in 2026. She added that eligibility is primarily based on proximity to existing infrastructure, with applicants required to be within 30 meters of a low-voltage distribution pole.
