Cabinet Office Reviews Staff at Maina Soko

By Patricia Banda

The Cabinet Office has begun reviewing the staff establishment at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka to improve service delivery.

Defence Minister AMBROSE LUFUMA says the exercise aims to allow recruitment of junior medical officers to address staffing gaps at the facility.

Mr. LUFUMA was responding to concerns raised by the Medical Centre’s Commandant, Brigadier General Dr. LEVY MUCHEMWA, who reported inadequate staffing levels.

The Minister also assured management that a Zambia National Service unit would soon be deployed to repair a section of the leaking roof at the hospital.

The issues came to light during Mr. LUFUMA’s visit to the medical centre, where he presented Christmas hampers to mothers of babies born on Christmas Day.

He also distributed hampers to patients admitted at the facility and wished them a speedy recovery.

Maina Soko Medical Centre recorded the birth of two female babies on Christmas Day, at around 02:00 hours and 08:49 hours.

Meanwhile, Brigadier General MUCHEMWA revealed that the number of patients attended to at the facility has doubled to 93,488, up from 47,008 in 2022.

He said the hospital requires more specialised doctors, including junior medical officers, to meet the growing demand for services.
