Great East Road Reopened After Kankumba Bridge Collapse

The Great East Road has been reopened to traffic after engineers from the Zambia National Service (ZNS) and the Road Development Agency (RDA) constructed a diversion following the collapse of Kankumba Bridge in Rufunsa District.

The road was reopened at 03:30hrs, according to a statement issued by Principal Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala.

Mr. Shalala said travellers to and from Eastern Province, Malawi, and Mozambique can now proceed with their journeys.

He added that engineers will now shift focus to the construction of a permanent bridge.

The reconnection had been delayed yesterday due to heavy rains, after culverts at Kankhumba stream were washed away on Thursday afternoon.
