DMMU Evacuates Flood Victims in Lumezi

By Rosemary Kamanga

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- has evacuated 54 people affected by flooding in Kamwala area of Lumezi District in Eastern Province.

DMMU Senior Communications Officer MATTHEWS MUSUKWA says the evacuation was carried out with support from the Zambia Air Force, whose aircraft safely transported the victims together with their personal belongings to Kazembe Ward.

Mr. MUSUKWA says the floods have rendered 127 households homeless after their homes collapsed due to heavy rainfall recorded in recent days.

He says the displaced families are currently being sheltered at Kazembe Primary School, where DMMU, working with cooperating partners, is supplying food and other essential relief items.

Mr. MUSUKWA adds that other affected families in nearby villages, including Chimalilo, Saili and Bodola, are being housed in temporary shelters within their communities.
