The National Forensic Science and Bio-metrics Department will soon implement a Combined DNA Index System -CODIS, aimed at improving identification and reducing the number of unclaimed bodies in mortuaries.

Acting State Forensic Analyst INNOCENT MAKASA explains that, once fully implemented, CODIS will allow the department to match DNA profiles of missing persons with their relatives, whether close or distant.
Dr. MAKASA has also revealed that the department handled more than 450 cases in 2025, generating over 1,000 DNA samples.
Speaking to ZNBC news, he noted that around 80 percent of the cases analysed were related to sexual offences.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Principal Public Relations Officer MWALA KALALUKA said the department has put in place measures to strengthen evidence collection and case management for various criminal offences, including Sexual Trauma and Abuse cases.
Mr. KALALUKA added that these interventions are expected to improve case turnaround times, increase completion rates, and strengthen the role of DNA evidence in the justice system.
