Government Challenges Federations to Win More Medals

By Chansa Kunda

Government has challenged sports federations to deliver stronger performances across various competitions this year, following Zambia’s achievement of 241 medals in 2025.

ELVIS NKANDU – Sports Minister

Sports Minister ELVIS NKANDU says the medal haul was encouraging, noting that it was achieved by 26 federations competing in regional, continental and global events.

The 2025 medal tally surpassed the 2024 record of 232 medals.

Speaking during a medal presentation ceremony held in Lusaka today, Mr. NKANDU said with several major events scheduled for 2026, federations are expected to exceed last year’s performance.

He also urged federations to strengthen talent identification programmes by expanding their reach to rural areas, rather than focusing only on athletes along the line of rail.

Meanwhile, National Sports Council of Zambia Acting Chief Executive Officer MONICA LOMBE thanked the Government for the support provided in the past year, saying it enabled federations to compete effectively and meet their sporting calendars.
