Government has commenced student loan support at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University, with 452 first-year students shortlisted to benefit from the scheme.

Education Minister DOUGLAS SYAKALIMA says the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board –HELSB- student loan scheme will take effect from the 2026 academic year.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. SYAKALIMA disclosed that 533 applications were received for the 2026 academic intake.
He explained that the selection process took into account eligibility requirements as well as individual circumstances, allowing more qualified applicants to be considered.
The Minister described the initiative as a historic step towards widening fair access to higher education, particularly in the fields of medicine and health sciences.
Mr. SYAKALIMA said the support is strategic, as it responds to Zambia’s health workforce needs and efforts to strengthen the national health system.

Meanwhile, Levy Mwanawasa Medical University Acting Vice-Chancellor SEKELANI BANDA thanked Government for extending financial assistance to the institution.
Professor BANDA described the support as a significant step in advancing human capital development in the health sector.
And HELSB Deputy Director of Finance FLOYD NDABULULA said the Board remains committed to working with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth roll-out of the programme.
