Zambia Sends Relief Food to Mozambique

Government has donated 500 metric tonnes of white maize and 50 metric tonnes of beans to flood victims in Mozambique.

Acting Minister of Finance and National Planning PETER KAPALA says the donation is Zambia’s response to a humanitarian emergency caused by devastating floods that have affected large parts of Mozambique.

Mr. KAPALA says Government is saddened by the disaster, which has affected more than seven hundred thousand people across five provinces, claiming lives and disrupting essential services.

He said this during the handover of the humanitarian food relief at Chanida Border Post in Katete District, Eastern Province.

Mr. KAPALA also disclosed that two Zambia Air Force aircraft have been deployed to assist with disaster response operations in Mozambique.

Meanwhile, Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU- National Coordinator NORMAN CHIPAKUPAKU described the situation in Mozambique as heartbreaking.

And Mozambique’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Mozambican Community Abroad MARIA DE FATIMA MANSO thanked the Zambian Government for the donation, saying it reflects the strong relations between the two countries.

She added that the relief will help ease the impact of the disaster on affected communities.
