Zambia to Build Seven Modern Border Posts

By Mark Ziligone

The Government has announced plans to build seven modern border posts between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to improve trade, connectivity, and economic cooperation between the two nations.

Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development Minister CHARLES MILUPI says the border infrastructure projects will be carried out through Public-Private Partnership –PPP- agreements.

Mr. MILUPI says the new border posts will feature upgraded roads and modern facilities, including banking services, housing, truck parking areas, and enhanced immigration and customs infrastructure to support cross-border trade.

One of the major projects will involve constructing a bridge over the Luapula River at Chawalwe, with border facilities on both sides, including the Copperbelt region.

In an interview with ZNBC News, Mr. MILUPI said the Government is upgrading border facilities at Sakania, Mokambo, Kipushi, Kambowa, and Kasumbalesa, among others.

He noted that some roads, previously impassable during the rainy season, are being upgraded to all-weather standards to ensure uninterrupted movement of goods and people.

The Minister stated that the border towns will be developed into modern commercial hubs, offering essential services to support trade and mining activities in the Copperbelt and North-Western provinces.

Mr. MILUPI further said the projects are being undertaken through the PPP model due to limited public funding following Zambia’s past debt challenges.

He also revealed that concessions have been granted to private developers, who will construct and maintain the facilities while charging affordable user fees to ensure sustainability and accessibility for citizens.
