Zambia, IMF Begin Talks on New Growth-Focused Programme

By Mercy Mwepa
Government has begun discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a new programme for Zambia.
Finance and National Planning Minister, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, says the talks will focus on driving economic growth rather than stabilisation.
Speaking in South Africa during an interview on the sidelines of the ongoing Mining Indaba, Dr. Musokotwane explained that the conclusion of the discussions is expected after the general elections scheduled for 13th August 2026.
He further noted that the revitalisation of the TAZARA railway line will be critical in transporting the anticipated increase in copper production from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Dr. Musokotwane added that government is working on a programme to ensure the railway line becomes economically viable, similar to the Lobito Corridor. He said investments are being encouraged along the railway route, particularly in the agriculture sector.
