Government Responds to CPI 2025 Results, Calls for Dialogue

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged citizens to detest and frown upon corruption if the fight against graft is to be won.

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa disclosed this during a media engagement in Lusaka today, in response to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025 results released by Transparency International Zambia (TIZ).

Mr. Mweetwa, who is also Minister of Information and Media, said President Hichilema remains resolute in ensuring Zambia improves its CPI rating, targeting a score of 40 out of 100. He emphasized that the President has not shifted his stance on fighting corruption “with an iron fist” and has put in place several measures to ensure a methodical approach.

He added that government acknowledges the CPI findings and has called for dialogue with TIZ and civil society organizations, urging them to not only highlight challenges but also propose solutions.

Mr. Mweetwa noted that the reasons advanced for Zambia’s decline in CPI ratings show that more needs to be done, despite interventions already underway. He cited limited resources for oversight institutions, which government is addressing through increased funding to agencies such as the ACC and DEC.

He also dismissed perceptions that Zambia’s justice system is politicized, stressing that no one is above the law.
