“Digging Deeper”: KCM Pushes Ahead with Konkola Deep Mining Project

By Mercy Mwepa

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) says works are progressing at the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) in Chililabombwe, aimed at fully exploring the mine’s potential.

KCM Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Dr. John Kunda said the company has engaged two firms to support the exploitation of underground resources.

He explained that Mancala, a reputable Australian mining company, is carrying out dewatering works, while Flint is working on the high‑speed rail system to facilitate the transportation of materials from underground.

Dr. Kunda told ZNBC News in Cape Town, South Africa, that KCM is also investing in other initiatives to ensure the mine realizes maximum benefits from its underground operations.

KDMP features one of Zambia’s deepest shafts at 1,505 metres, situated on one of the world’s highest‑grade copper deposits, with over 291 million tonnes of ore and a projected mine life of at least 50 years.
