Mtolo Calls for Global Cooperation to Strengthen Agriculture

Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo has called for stronger global cooperation and increased investment in irrigation, mechanization, and storage infrastructure.

He also emphasized the need to empower young people in agriculture.

Speaking during a high-level panel discussion at the International Fund for Agricultural Development meeting in Rome, where he represented President Hakainde Hichilema, Mr. Mtolo stressed that agriculture remains central to Zambia’s economic transformation and food security strategy.

He noted that 65 percent of Zambia’s population is youthful, presenting both a significant opportunity and a potential risk if not meaningfully engaged.

Mr. Mtolo said agriculture must be positioned as a viable and profitable sector that absorbs and empowers young people.

He further observed that wars and conflicts in distant parts of the world directly affect Zambia through rising prices of key commodities such as fertilizer and other farming inputs.

Mr. Mtolo urged IFAD to remain mindful of global dynamics when allocating resources to developing countries.
