Police in Kitwe have arrested 60 suspected trespassers on land belonging to Mopani Copper Mines.
Among those apprehended are 38 women accused of trespassing on Mopani property in Kitwe’s Farm 1469.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mwala Yuyi said the operation was conducted following several complaints from Mopani Copper Mines regarding alleged encroachment on its titled land, including an area earmarked for the construction of a tailings dam.
Mr. Yuyi explained that individuals have been illegally allocating land to unsuspecting buyers without legal documentation. Some of the suspects interviewed admitted to paying amounts ranging from K250 to K1,000 for plots, without receiving proof of ownership from the sellers.
He added that police are investigating the claims, and all suspects remain in custody.
