The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has assured Zambians that the ongoing delimitation of constituencies and the introduction of the proportional representation electoral system will be implemented fairly, transparently and in line with the Constitution.
Speaking during ZNBC TV’s Sunday Interview , ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said the Commission is currently conducting nationwide consultations in all 116 districts as part of the delimitation exercise, which will result in the creation of 70 new constituencies.
Ms Zaloumis said the process is guided by the law and will take into account population size, geographical factors, historical representation and equity.
She says no part of the country will be ignored in favour of urban centres.
Ms Zaloumis has dismissed fears of changing or drawing constituency boundaries in a way that unfairly benefits one political party or group.
She says the Commission has deliberately taken consultations to the districts and provinces to allow citizens and stakeholders to make submissions before final decisions are made.
