More than 7,500 under-five children and expectant mothers in Lumezi District, Eastern Province are expected to benefit from a nutritional initiative spearheaded by government in partnership with Save the Children and The Hunger Project.

The project targets 6,000 under-five children and 1,500 expectant mothers.

Speaking at the launch in Eastern Zambia, Deputy Permanent Secretary Lewis Mwape urged stakeholders to supplement and reshape the school feeding programme being implemented by government. He said the initiative will contribute to development in both the health and education sectors.

Save the Children Country Director, Chilobe Kambikambi, explained that with funding of over one million US dollars from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the project will directly support Zambia’s Health National Strategic Plan (2022–2026). She added that the programme will strengthen health systems and service delivery, while supporting quality improvements in maternal and child health facilities.

Meanwhile, The Hunger Project Country Director, Samuel Mtambo, said his organisation has invested over 85 million Kwacha in projects across Eastern Province, including the construction of the Vubwi epicenter, the Chipangali nutrition project, and maternal and child health initiatives in Kasenengwa District.
