MRC Clears Mopani After Safety Compliance Improvements

The Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC) has lifted the suspension of underground operations at Mopani Copper Mines’ Mufulira mine following the implementation of enhanced safety measures.

Ministry of Mines Principal Public Relations Officer Kalani Muchima said the suspension was initially imposed due to the mine’s failure to comply with safety regulations, particularly the requirement to maintain an accurate personnel accounting system for underground workers.

Mr. Muchima explained that Mopani has since introduced a Two-Point Manual Tag Board System and upgraded its biometric system to automatically generate clearance reports two hours after each shift.

He added that the company has also installed and reactivated Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) and real-time monitoring systems at critical control points. The integration of these systems will allow access to control data and archiving of footage for compliance and audit purposes.

Mr. Muchima emphasized that these measures meet the requirements of Mining Regulation 218, ensuring a safer working environment for miners.
