The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for increased investment in water development and sanitation, stressing that the sector is critical to improving access to primary health care.
WHO Country Representative Dr. Clement Lusuba said safe water and proper sanitation systems form the foundation of disease prevention and overall community well-being.
Dr. Lusuba explained that the organization supports health facilities by promoting infection prevention and control measures, while also responding to public health threats linked to inadequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services.
He made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on Water Development and Sanitation Minister Collins Nzovu at his office.
Mr. Nzovu called for stronger partnerships in preparedness and response to public health emergencies, including cholera outbreaks. He acknowledged WHO’s support in advancing governance reforms, standards development, disease surveillance, health risk management, and joint monitoring systems linked to WASH.
The Minister emphasized that such interventions are critical for tracking progress, anticipating climate-related risks, and informing policy and investment decisions. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to sustained collaboration with WHO and other partners in advancing Zambia’s development and health priorities.
