Kasune: Strengthened Laws Reinforce Zambia’s Fight Against Child Marriage

By Ellen Hambuba

Government says strengthened laws are providing a solid foundation in the fight to protect children across the country.

Justice Minister Princess Kasune noted that the reform of the Marriage Amendment Act No. 13 of 2023 sends a clear message that children are not for marriage, reinforcing Zambia’s position as a leader on the continent in safeguarding girls’ rights.

She explained that government has expanded social protection programmes, including social cash transfers and community support initiatives, to ease economic pressures that often lead to early marriages.

Ms. Kasune added that investments in free education and the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) are helping keep girls in school and expanding opportunities for young people.

She urged citizens to remain united in the fight against child marriage, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and HIV, stressing that government will ensure every child grows up with dignity, opportunity, and choice.

This is contained in a statement issued to ZNBC News by Ministry of Justice Principal Public Relations Officer Joe Nkadaani.
