ZANIS- A 23-year-old man has been buried alive while undertaking illegal gold mining in Lusangazi District, Eastern Province.
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 21, 2026, around 15:00 hours at Sasali Gold Mine, and was only reported yesterday.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the development and identified the deceased as Alex Zulu.
Mr. Mweemba explained that Zulu, together with five others, sneaked into the Sasali Gold Mine area for illegal mining. He said the earth collapsed on Zulu in one of the mining pits during the process.
Mr. Mweemba added that Zulu’s body is yet to be retrieved.
