The University Teaching Hospital’s (UTH) Stroke Unit has recorded a significant reduction in mortality rates — dropping from 40 percent to 10 percent since its establishment in 2023.
UTH Neurology Registrar Limwanya Chipale told ZNBC News that the improvement reflects enhanced specialised care and better stroke management at the facility.
Dr. Chipale, however, raised concern over an increase in stroke cases among young adults, with more patients in their 20s and 30s being admitted to the unit.
He explained that many patients continue to delay seeking medical attention, often arriving outside the critical treatment window, which significantly lowers their chances of full recovery.
Dr. Chipale urged the public to be alert to the sudden onset of symptoms and to seek immediate medical care, stressing that early intervention remains key to survival and improved outcomes.
