The World Bank has pledged to provide financial and technical support to enhance soil health for improved food security.
World Bank Group Vice President for Planet, Guangzhe Chen, noted that healthy soils are the foundation of sustainable food systems and critical to securing future harvests. He made the remarks during the launch of the World Bank-supported Knowledge Impact Programme for repurposing agriculture support toward soil health in Lusaka.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo called for a decisive shift from traditional input subsidies toward long-term investments that restore soil health and strengthen agricultural resilience.
Mr. Mtolo emphasized that public agricultural spending must move beyond short-term consumption support to productive financing that rebuilds degraded land. He added that redirecting subsidies toward regenerative agriculture, research, and climate-smart practices will guarantee better returns for farmers.
