About 6,000 participants are expected to take part in the 2026 Kenneth Kaunda Marathon, scheduled for April 28 in Lusaka.
The event will be staged at a cost of K6.5 million, with K3.5 million raised through sponsorship from Professional Insurance and Stanbic Bank. Professional Insurance, as headline sponsor, has contributed K2 million, while Stanbic Bank, the gold sponsor, has invested K1.5 million.
Speaking during the unveiling of sponsorship, Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba said the marathon is an important event for the Zambian people as it celebrates the legacy of the country’s first President and promotes sports tourism.
Lusaka Fitness Squad President Katai Chola noted that the aim is to grow the marathon further, as this will help raise awareness on healthy living, which is key in combating non-communicable diseases.
Zambia Athletics President Major Bernard Bwalya added that the target is to have the marathon certified by World Athletics so that it can be recognized as an international competition.
