Chikote: No Immediate Impact on Fuel Prices Despite Global Tensions

By Sharon Siame
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote says Zambia is not expected to see an immediate impact on pump prices this month due to existing fuel stocks procured at lower international prices.
Mr. Chikote, however, cautioned that sustained increases in international prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene, and Jet A1 could occur if geopolitical tensions in the Middle East persist.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka, the Minister explained that such developments may exert upward pressure on domestic pump prices unless offset by exchange rate gains or policy interventions.
He assured the nation that there is no immediate threat of fuel shortages, given the country’s current stock levels which provide reasonable protection against short-term shocks.
Mr. Chikote emphasized that government remains vigilant and committed to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply nationwide.
