Government Steps Up Fight Against Health Sector Corruption

Government has intensified measures aimed at eradicating corruption and mismanagement of public resources in the health sector.

Acting Health Minister Cornelius Mweetwa said government will not tolerate corruption at any level, as the vice undermines the provision of essential medicines to citizens.

Mr. Mweetwa made the remarks when he met a delegation from Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) at the Ministry of Health in Lusaka, during discussions on Zambia’s performance in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index.

He emphasized President Hakainde Hichilema’s stance that there is “no sacred cow” in the fight against corruption. Among the measures cited were the strengthening of procurement systems through electronic platforms to enhance transparency, and the digitalisation of the medical supply chain via an electronic logistics management system to track medicines and equipment from central warehouses to health facilities nationwide.

TI-Z Chapter President Priscilla Chansa said the organisation engaged the Minister to discuss how corruption and mismanagement in the Ministry of Health can be addressed, noting that the meeting forms part of TI-Z’s broader engagement with stakeholders on national governance issues.
