Government considers building ships on Lake Tanganyika

President Hakainde Hichilema says Government is considering a project on Lake Tanganyika to start building ships in Mpulungu district.

 

President Hichilema says the project is meant to provide the country with water transport that will be used to ferry various goods such as Sugar for export to other markets such as Burundi.

 

President Hichilema said this when responding to questions from youths during an interactive session at the 2026 Youth Indaba.

 

And the President said the Free Education Policy will be made  law before the 2026 general election.

 

President Hichilema  stated that the policy has helped to reduce the education gap in the country by increasing access to learning opportunities for many pupils.

 

He added that government remains committed to safeguarding the education system, describing it as a critical investment in the country’s future.

 

The President also encouraged young people to take advantage of their youthfulness by embracing innovation and actively participate in a competitive business environment.

 

He said this can be achieved through effective implementation, monitoring, and control of youth-driven initiatives to ensure that they meaningfully contribute to national development.

 

President Hichilema further disclosed that government will engage more cooperating partners to provide internship opportunities for Zambian youths, which could lead to permanent employment and business supply opportunities.

 

And Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati said government is working with the private sector to drive innovation across the country.

 

Mr. Mutati said improved connectivity is key to supporting these innovation hubs, as it allows youths to access data and digital tools needed to develop solutions and innovative ideas.

 

He further explained that government is expanding the country’s digital infrastructure, including fibre connectivity linking Zambia to Mozambique and other countries in the region.
