Government will, within the next two weeks, launch construction works for a new and modern Chiwempala Market in Chingola, which is expected to accommodate more than 2,000 traders.
The old market was destroyed by fire last year, with property worth millions of kwacha reduced to ashes.
Chingola Member of Parliament Chipoka Mulenga said President Hakainde Hichilema will visit the area to fulfill his pledge to help traders rebuild and boost their businesses.
Mr. Mulenga, who is also Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, explained that the new Chiwempala Market is intended to provide a conducive trading environment for traders. He further disclosed that the newly constructed ablution block at the market will be commissioned this week to enable traders to begin using the facility.
During his visit, Mr. Mulenga assured traders of government’s commitment to supporting their businesses and addressing their needs.
Chingola Town Clerk Namukolo Kalufyanya noted that the ablution block was constructed with support from well-wishers and cooperating partners in the district.
Meanwhile, Chingola District Commissioner Howard Kamwandi urged traders to take care of the facility.
In November 2025, the market suffered a major fire damage.
