YAMBA Denied Bail Pending Appeal, Court Rules

By Memory Bbuku

The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has denied former Secretary to the Treasury, FREDSON YAMBA, bail pending appeal.

Delivering the ruling today, Acting Chief Resident Magistrate IRENE WISHIMANGA stated that Mr. YAMBA’s application lacked merit.

Magistrate WISHIMANGA further noted that the former Secretary to Treasury’s pending appeal has slim chances of success.

Mr. YAMBA, along with former Minister of Foreign Affairs, JOSEPH MALANJI, was convicted in September on charges of failing to follow prescribed procedures and possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Mr. YAMBA’s conviction relates to the irregular authorisation of a 108 million kwacha transfer to the Zambian Mission in Turkey for the procurement of real estate.

Magistrate WISHIMANGA sentenced Mr. YAMBA to three years’ imprisonment for failure to comply with established procedures, while Mr. MALANJI is currently serving a four-year sentence.

Mr. YAMBA has since appealed his two-year sentence, arguing that the court erred in convicting him of the offence.
