The Ministry of Health has launched the Fourth Zambia-China Smile Mission, which will provide free reconstructive surgery and comprehensive care for children born with cleft lips and palates.
Health Minister Elijah Muchima said the initiative will help address the high incidence of cleft palate cases in Zambia. He made the remarks while officiating at the launch held at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.
Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Han Jing emphasized the importance of public health, describing it as a precious treasure of humanity and a vital component of practical cooperation between China and Zambia.
Meanwhile, UTH Adult Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent Charles Mbewe explained that the Smile Mission aims to facilitate joint surgeries by Zambian and Chinese surgeons, build specialized skills, and foster knowledge exchange to benefit the hospital and improve patient care.
