Zambia, Finland Explore Deeper Cooperation

By Ruth Chayinda

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has called on Finland to deepen cooperation with Zambia across various sectors of the economy.

President HICHILEMA says one of the key areas requiring stronger collaboration is the mining sector, noting that the UPND administration is committed to eliminating illegal mining and promoting formal, regulated trade.

He says the Government recognises the importance of legal and safe mining and is working to ensure the sector does not become a source of insecurity.

The President said this when he met a Finnish Development Policy Committee delegation at State House, led by JANI KOKKO of the opposition Social Democratic Party.

President HICHILEMA also appealed to Finland to support Zambia’s push for reforms at the UN Security Council, saying it is vital that Africa receives fair and adequate representation.

Meanwhile, Mr. KOKKO said Finland is ready to partner with Zambia to find solutions to the challenges the country is facing.

He added that, through shared values, the two countries can tackle existing issues and draw greater benefit from their relationship.

Mr. KOKKO further observed that Zambia and Finland have moved from a largely development-focused relationship to a broader economic partnership.
