Eastern Province has recorded 43 drowning cases between January and November this year.
Provincial Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, revealed that Lundazi District accounts for the highest number of drownings at 10, followed by Petauke with 9, and Chipata Central with 7.
Mr. Mweemba said that out of the 43 victims, 26 were male adults, two female adults, 10 male juveniles, and five female juveniles.
He appealed to members of the public to avoid crossing flooded water bodies, noting that it is unfortunate the province is already recording high drowning cases even before the rains have intensified.
Mr. Mweemba also urged parents and guardians to monitor children’s movements to prevent them from attempting to cross or swim in flooded streams.
Recently, the Eastern Water and Sanitation Company advised the public to avoid engaging in activities around water installations, following two drowning incidents at Lutembwe Dam in Chipata District within three months.
