Government has launched the construction of a 100-megawatt solar power project in Katobola area of Chirundu District, Southern Province.
The $90 million initiative is being developed through a joint venture between ZESCO and JIGSCO Energy Corporation.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote said the project represents a significant step forward for Zambia’s energy sector, strengthening national energy security and driving broader economic development.
ZESCO Managing Director Justin Longo revealed that the utility has already secured land for similar solar projects in other parts of the country, signaling a wider rollout of renewable energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Headman Katobola appealed to the contractor to prioritize engaging local people in the project to ensure community participation and benefits.
