Member organisations of the Non-Governmental Gender Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) in Eastern Province have expressed support for the Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7, describing it as progressive.
During a consultative meeting in Chipata, the organisations also appealed to NGOCC to withdraw from the Oasis Forum, arguing that its stance against the Bill contradicts its mandate of promoting female participation.
Youth Development Foundation Executive Director Chinoya Muyeye said members do not understand why NGOCC is opposing the Bill and urged the Council to rescind its decision.
- Janet Chirwa, Chairperson of the Lundazi District Women Association, said Bill 7 is good and should be passed.
- Dorica Mbewe, Chairperson of the Chadiza District Women Association, noted that vast constituencies like Chadiza should be divided for better representation.
- Siliky Chindambo, Chairperson of the Mambwe District Women Development Association, said NGOCC should have conducted wider consultations before objecting to the Bill.
- Machisa Zimba, Coordinator of the Eastern Province Network for Persons Living with Disabilities, welcomed the Bill for promoting inclusivity in decision-making positions.
The collective support highlights growing regional endorsement of Bill No. 7, particularly for its provisions on representation, inclusivity, and constituency delimitation.
