Police in Chasefu District, Eastern Province, have arrested 30-year-old Makaiko Kumwenda of Manyala Village in Chief Magodi’s area in connection with the murder of his 4-year-old daughter, Sinyela Kumwenda.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that the suspect allegedly strangled the child between December 7 and 8, 2025.
Mr. Mweemba explained that Kumwenda took the girl from his expectant wife against her advice. On December 8, the suspect’s sister discovered the child’s body with bruises on the neck and blood oozing from the nose, mouth, and ears.
He added that the suspect was found in intense prayers, claiming the devil would not kill his child. When confronted, Kumwenda became violent, prompting the matter to be reported to Emusa Police Post.
Police have since taken the suspect into custody as investigations continue.
