Zambia Launches Integrated Migration System and Data Strategy

Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu has launched the Integrated Migration Management Information System and the National Migration Data Strategy for 2026–2030, marking a major milestone in Zambia’s efforts to strengthen migration governance.
In a speech read on his behalf by Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo, Mr. Mwiimbu said the two initiatives were developed with a strong focus on human rights, gender sensitivity, and protection to ensure benefits reach both Zambians and migrants. He explained that the systems will support the development of responsive migration policies, strengthen border management, and enhance protection mechanisms.
Department of Immigration Director General Japhet Lishomwa noted that the new platform will bolster national security by improving Zambia’s ability to detect and address irregular migration, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling. He added that the system will speed up decision-making, reduce administrative bottlenecks, promote transparency, and ensure consistent application of immigration laws.
Meanwhile, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Chief of Mission Keisha Livermore highlighted that the migration data strategy will provide frontline officers with real-time harmonized information, enabling them to quickly identify vulnerable individuals.
