Govt Orders Arrests Over Kasompe Airstrip Demolitions

By Honester Mshoka
Government has announced that all Chingola Municipal Council workers involved in the demolition of 10 structures built on the Kasompe airstrip will be arrested.
Local Government and Rural Development Minister Gift Sialubalo said the actions by the local authority undermine government’s commitment to improving the welfare of citizens.
Speaking to the media in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Sialubalo directed the council to provide a full comprehensive report within 24 hours on the demolitions. He revealed that preliminary findings indicate the land in question belongs to the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority, and urged stakeholders to work together to find lasting solutions.
Chingola Member of Parliament Chipoka Mulenga also expressed disappointment, stressing that the local authority must follow the correct procedures. He added that the equipment used in the demolitions should have been deployed for road rehabilitation rather than destroying infrastructure.
