The government says Zambia’s planned energy projects are expected to add 2,610 megawatts of new electricity between 2025 and 2026.
Energy Minister MAKOZO CHIKOTE says the projected addition exceeds the country’s current demand, placing Zambia on a firm path towards future surplus power generation and improved energy security.

Mr. CHIKOTE was speaking during a consultative meeting with 20 power developer companies, as the government moves to strengthen oversight of ongoing and planned energy projects.
During the meeting, power developers outlined several challenges affecting project implementation.
These included limited incentives for hydropower investment, complex multi-agency land acquisition procedures, and statutory delays such as prolonged approvals and legal reviews.
In response, Mr. CHIKOTE assured developers that the government will tackle the delays and is considering the creation of a one-stop shop or dedicated task force to streamline processes.
