The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has asked Zambia to host a high-level meeting of Defence Ministers and Chiefs of Defence Forces from member states to address the deteriorating security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
ICGLR Executive Secretary Dr. Mubita Luwabelwa said Zambia was chosen due to its recent role in promoting peace and stability in the region. He expressed concern over the situation in eastern DRC, where M23 rebels have reportedly gained more territory despite the signing of the Washington Process.
Speaking in Lusaka during a courtesy call on Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma, Dr. Luwabelwa emphasized the urgency of regional cooperation.
Mr. Lufuma said the Ministry of Defence, working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is considering the request and will respond in due course. He stressed that peace in the DRC is in Zambia’s national interest, given its strategic importance as a neighbour.
Mr. Lufuma also thanked the ICGLR for entrusting Zambia with the responsibility of hosting such a critical meeting. The ICGLR further disclosed that a Heads of State and Government Summit is being planned as part of broader efforts to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
This was contained in a statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala.
