A Consultant Surgeon at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Mutuna Chiwele, has advised the public to limit their intake of red meat to help prevent colon cancer.
Dr. Chiwele cautioned that excessive consumption of red meat, combined with unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol use, can significantly increase the risk of developing the disease.
He further noted that lack of physical exercise and diets low in fiber also contribute to colon cancer, which can spread to vital organs such as the liver and lungs if not detected and treated early.
The surgeon urged the public to watch for warning signs including blood in the stool, persistent constipation, and low blood levels, which may indicate colon cancer.
With the festive season approaching, Dr. Chiwele emphasized the importance of proactive health measures and encouraged individuals to seek medical attention if they experience concerning symptoms.
