Russia has donated food items valued at two million US dollars to Zambia, including split peas and sunflower cooking oil, to help address food shortages caused by the 2023/2024 drought.
Receiving the consignment in Lusaka today, Vice President Mutale Nalumango said about two million Zambians continue to face hunger, and reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with cooperating partners such as Russia and the World Food Programme to support vulnerable communities.
Mrs. Nalumango emphasized that social protection programmes, including the Social Cash Transfer and Cash for Work initiatives, remain central to government’s efforts to improve livelihoods and cushion the impact of food insecurity.
Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit National Coordinator Norman Chipakupaku noted that the donated food items will significantly reduce hunger among affected households.
Russia’s Ambassador to Zambia, Azim Yarakhmedov, underscored the strong bilateral ties between the two countries, stating that the donation reflects Russia’s spirit of cooperation and solidarity with Zambia.
