By Lucky Phiri
Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has clarified that all Members of Parliament who voted in favour of Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7 will remain in office until the dissolution of the National Assembly in 2026.
Mr. Mweetwa has described as null and void the decision by Patriotic Front faction Acting President Given Lubinda that the affected MPs had been expelled.
Addressing the media in Lusaka, Mr. Mweetwa explained that the actions taken by opposition MPs were within the confines of the law, noting that lawmakers were executing their national duties. He further assured PF Members of Parliament that no individual or institution will interfere with the work of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mweetwa said government has taken note of the pastoral letter issued by the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops on the closure of the Jubilee Year. He emphasized that government will continue to respect and work with the church, including the Catholic Church, in advancing national development.
Mr. Mweetwa reaffirmed government’s commitment to fostering dialogue and transparency on issues of national importance.
