Attorney General MULILO KABESHA has confirmed that South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal has granted the family of former President EDGAR LUNGU permission to appeal against an order for the repatriation of his body to Zambia.

In a statement issued to ZNBC News in LUSAKA today, Mr. KABESHA said the decision follows an application submitted by the LUNGU family on September 17, 2025.
He said the application challenges a ruling by the High Court of South Africa, which directed that Mr. LUNGU’s body be returned to Zambia for a state funeral.
Mr. KABESHA said the application was made by former First Lady ESTHER LUNGU and the Former President’s sister BERTHA.
He has named others as DALITSO LUNGU, TASILA LUNGU, CHIYESO LUNGU, CHARLES PHIRI and MAKEBI ZULU.
Mr. KABESHA said the respondents are the Government of the Republic of Zambia, Two Mountains Burial Services (PTY) Limited and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
