Kafue Mayor Urges Vigilance as Sinkholes Cause Damage
By Nyambe Nalishebo
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has expressed concern over the growing number of sinkholes in Kafue District, particularly in Chalala, Lilayi, Mahopo, Shaft 5, Apex, and New Kasama.
DMMU Director for Disaster and Humanitarian Operations Management, Amos Mumba, warned that the sinkholes pose a serious threat to residents in the affected areas.
Speaking during a tour of the sites, Mr. Mumba said the DMMU is facilitating a comprehensive geological survey to determine the extent of the problem.
Kafue Mayor Buumba Malambo said the local authority is working closely with the DMMU to address the situation. She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any further incidents to the authorities.
Ms. Malambo noted that the sinkholes have already caused significant damage, including the collapse of a small house in Lilayi.
