Government says it is making progress in the fight against child marriage.
Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary Beatrice Chilomo said Zambia has strengthened laws and policies aimed at protecting the rights of girls.
Speaking during the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York, Ms. Chilomo highlighted legal reforms introduced to address harmful practices, including the Children’s Code Act and the Gender Equity and Equality Act.
She emphasized the need to invest further in girls’ education, economic opportunities, and community awareness.
Meanwhile, Plan International Policy and Advocacy Lead Johanne Westcott-Simpson commended Zambia for demonstrating strong leadership in addressing child marriage through progressive policies and social protection programmes.
United Nations Child Protection Officer Edith Bardel described Zambia as a strong example in the region, citing government’s commitment and collaboration with traditional leaders to end child marriage.
Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Chola Milambo, also emphasized the importance of partnerships between government, civil society, and international organisations in advancing the rights of girls.
