Government Maintains Fuel Prices for March Despite Global Oil Surge

By Ellen Hambuba
Government has maintained fuel prices for March despite rising global oil prices triggered by ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Professor Ephraim Munshifwa said crude oil prices have increased from about 78 to 94 US dollars per barrel, putting pressure on domestic pricing.
Prof. Munshifwa explained that government has taken measures to cushion consumers from price shocks, including engaging key players in the petroleum sector and securing alternative sources of supply.
He added that government has also strengthened fuel reserves by upgrading storage facilities in Mongu, Mansa, and Chipata, with a combined capacity of 20 million litres.
Prof. Munshifwa assured that Zambia’s fuel supply remains stable, with current stock levels as follows:
Diesel: 285 million litres (56 days of cover)
Petrol: 40 million litres (23 days of cover)
Kerosene: 65.9 million litres
Jet A-1: 1.6 million litres
He has since urged the public not to panic-buy fuel, warning that hoarding will attract firm action from authorities.
