“Middle East Conflict Threatens Zambia’s Stability”

By Mary Kachepa

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed concern that the progress Zambia has made in driving macroeconomic stability could be undermined by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The President said the conflict has the potential to weaken global stability, noting its impact on petroleum prices through disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as on fertilizer and other commodities due to supply chain challenges.

Speaking when the United Nations system in Zambia paid a courtesy call on him at State House for the annual briefing on UN work in the country, President Hichilema said the conflict has changed the operating environment and is a matter of great concern to Zambia.

He emphasized that people are looking to the United Nations to help restore peace, security, and stability for development.

The President also called on the UN to help address challenges of misinformation and cyber abuse in relation to elections.

President Hichilema thanked the UN for supporting the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) in strengthening last-mile delivery of medicines and supplies.

He stressed that drug availability statistics mean little if patients cannot access the medicines they need.

He further underscored the importance of regular dialogue, saying he will always be available to engage as it helps address issues and challenges facing the people.

Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator Beatrice Mutali said the UN has continued to work with the Electoral Commission of Zambia to maintain electoral integrity, inclusivity, and credibility by implementing recommendations from the last general elections.

She added that the UN has also partnered with ZAMMSA to ensure medicines and medical supplies reach intended beneficiaries.
