Zambia to host 6th Africa safety award -AfriSAFE 2024

Zambia has been selected to host the 6th Africa safety award for excellence (AfriSAFE) event in November, 2024, spearheaded by Zambia sugar in Livingstone.

Labour and Social Security minister Brenda Tambatamba said the new dawn government placed among top of its agenda under her ministry the safety of workers.

Ms. Tambatamba said the event would be a catalyst to achieving the Government’s agenda in line with the 8th National Development Plan as safety could not be taken casually but required accountability for all stakeholders to win.

She said survival was the first freedom for humanity, adding that Zambia could not unlock its potential without the safety of workers who were movers of the economy.

Ms. Tambatamba said this was a call to action for people to approach safety in an integrated manner with many fundamental benefits such as preserving life and increased productivity, saving cost.

‘’I wish to applaud Zambia sugar for moving a whole African community to come along to Zambia because they are effective ambassadors who do what they are expected to do in the world of safety. The Government looks forward to over 600 delegates in 2024 ’’ she said

At the same event, tourism minister Rodney Sikumba said the AfriSAFE event was a great platform to showcase excellence in safety, not just our nation but many other countries across the continent and the world over.

He said this prestigious event was a testament to Zambia’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all workers in Zambia and those who visit the country.

Mr Sikumba said tourism was a priority sector of the economy sattaing that the new dawn government was committed to ensuring that Zambia, with its rich natural wonders, diverse culture, and warm hospitality remained a top destination for travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.

He noted that the Africa safety award for excellence conference, which was expected to host over 600 delegates, would further boost Zambia’s tourism targets.

Mr Sikumba noted that at the core of tourism, safety was paramount in the travel industry, which the government was tirelessly working to improve for the visitors to explore, relax, and enjoy their stay without concerns.

‘’government, in collaboration with industry stakeholders, has implemented stringent safety measures and protocols to ensure the well-being of tourists while preserving the authenticity of our unique attractions.’’ He said

And AfriSAFE president Nthabiseng Mmusi Said there was a need for respective leaders to prioritize safety at all workplaces because safety was not a privilege but a fundamental human right.

Ms. Mmusi said thousands of people die due to avoidable accidents resulting from failure to observe the safety of respective environments.

She said AfriSAFE was a response to this need and a call to action for cultures to strive for excellence in every aspect of life stating that the theme for the 2024 AfriSAFE event resonated deeply with the current happening in various countries citing the recent mining accident in Zambia tow which the bodies are yet to be retrieved.

‘’A strong safety culture is essential for suitable development and higher quality of life for all this meeting will provide a platform for knowledge sharing with different stakeholders ,and facilitate conversations on emerging trends ‘’ she said
