Zambia, Tanzania, and China have officially commissioned works to revamp the TAZARA railway line, which will see the rehabilitation and upgrading of over 1,800 kilometers of rail.
The multimillion-dollar project is expected to boost annual freight capacity from 400,000 metric tons to 1.2 million metric tons and create 20,000 jobs across Zambia and Tanzania.
The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by President Hakainde Hichilema, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and Tanzania’s Vice President Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
TAZARA, which links the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, remains a vital transport corridor for both cargo and passengers.
President Hichilema said the revitalisation of the TAZARA corridor will position Zambia as a regional transport and logistics hub, facilitating increased trade, investment, and job creation. He added that the modernization of TAZARA is not only a testament to enduring partnerships but also a commitment to improving the lives of citizens.
Premier Li Qiang described TAZARA as a signature project, ushering in a new era of development and prosperity for Tanzania, Zambia, and China. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to safeguarding the revitalisation so that it stands as a benchmark of cooperation.
Vice President Nchimbi emphasized that the project will strengthen trade corridors and boost imports and exports, further integrating the region’s economies.
