Police in Gwembe, Southern Province, are investigating a case in which a newly born baby boy was found dumped in a pit-latrine at Chipepo Primary School.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer, Moono Namalongo, confirmed the incident, which occurred yesterday, November 25, around 07:00 hours.
Mr. Namalongo explained that the baby is believed to have been dumped between 01:00 and 07:00 hours. The matter was reported after a person inspecting the school toilets noticed blood and alerted teachers.
During subsequent cleaning, some pupils heard the cries of a baby from inside the pit-latrine, prompting a report to the police. Officers, with the assistance of medical personnel, managed to retrieve the infant alive.
Mr. Namalongo added that the mother of the baby has not yet been identified, and investigations into the matter have been launched.
