ECZ Won’t Extend Voter Registration

By Patricia Banda

Government says the Electoral Commission of Zambia –ECZ- will not extend the mass voter registration exercise due to time limitations ahead of the 2026 General Election.

Acting Leader of Government Business AMBROSE LUFUMA says the ECZ needs sufficient time to prepare the voters’ register before the polls.

Delivering a ministerial statement to the National Assembly on the National Voter Registration Exercise, Mr. LUFUMA said the process ran for 30 days, from 13 October 2025 to 11 November 2025.

He said the Commission is currently consolidating registration records from across the country.

Mr. LUFUMA was responding to Kantanshi Member of Parliament ANTHONY MUMBA and Solwezi East Member of Parliament ALEX KATAKWE, who asked whether the ECZ would consider extending the voter registration exercise during follow-up questions to his statement.

He also acknowledged that the ECZ faced challenges with equipment, as well as load-shedding in some areas, during the registration period.

Meanwhile, Mr. LUFUMA disclosed that the mobile National Registration Card –NRC- issuance exercise will resume in 2027, adding that members of the public who need NRCs can still obtain them from provincial offices.
